Practice Exercises

  • Section 1, "Elections," pp. 129-132:
    • Exercise 1: Use the vocabulary you learned from "Elections" to fill in the blanks.
    • Exercise 2: Read the news report and reflect on its significance by responding to the questions.
    • Prepare an oral presentation (5 minutes) on the events and issues surrounding a recent newsworthy election. Use Arabic press as your resource.
  • Section 2, "Conflicts and Terrorism," pp. 134-137:
    • Exercise 1: Use the vocabulary you learned from "Conflicts and Terrorism" to fill in the blanks.
    • Exercise 2: Read the news report and test your comprehension by responding to the questions.
    • Find two articles on a recent conflict or terrorist attack which differ widely in their representation of the event. Write an article (200 words) on the differences between the two authors' accounts, offering an explanation for these differences and for the attitudes, priorities, and choices of each author.
  • Memorize the vocabulary from pp. 70-73 of the Kendall book.
  • Complete the GLOSS online language lesson "Economic News" (http://gloss.dliflc.edu/products/gloss/ad_ecn201/default.html) to develop your listening skills.
  • Prepare to discuss the audio news segment from the GLOSS lesson in your conversation session; think about how the segment relates to events you have been reading about in the news. In your discussion, use the vocabulary related to economics from pp. 67-73 of the Kendall book.
  • Prepare to relate one of the top news stories of the week in your conversation session.
