Arabic is the official language of more than fifteen countries and is spoken by more than 300 million people worldwide, including 3.5 million people in the U.S. and Canada. Modern Standard Arabic is a modernized form of Classical Arabic and is used in writing and in formal spoken contexts such as political speeches, while spoken Arabic dialects are more commonly used in daily life and can differ significantly.
