Mosque Etiquette
Muslim visitors to Jordan discover local customs are similar to mosques elsewhere in the world. Non-Muslims must be aware of proper dress and etiquette when visiting a mosque. Shoes are removed before entering a mosque, and visitors should be clean and neatly attired. Women are expected to only have their face, hands, and feet showing while their heads, arms, and legs are expected to be covered. Men should wear a shirt and long pants. Inside the mosque, silence is the rule. In modern Islam it has become customary for men and women to pray separately. In some places this means multiple rows of worshipers with men in front and women in back. In other mosques, men and women pray in separate areas altogether.
