Inviting Friends to a Party (Intermediate)

Practice on Your Own

Nowadays, there are different ways to invite people to social gatherings – in person, by phone, email, Facebook, Viber groups… Of course, not all these platforms are appropriate for every type of social gathering. The level of formality determines which ways are appropriate.

Imagine you want to invite your friends to a birthday party/goodbye party/graduation party/etc.

  • Make a list of needed vocabulary, such as party, birthday, address, date…
  • Practice writing the information you would use to invite friends to a party through email or social media.
    • I am having a goodbye party at my house. Date: It is on Monday, May 28th.
    • Time: The party will start at 5:00pm.
    • Address: 28 Elm Street, Apt. 3, Amherst, MA 01002 It is the first door on the right.
    • Please respond to this email to RSVP.
  • Practice making some phone calls to invite your friends to your party. Prepare a phone call dialogue.
    • Hello, John. This is Ashley.
    • Hello, Ashley.
    • I am having a party this weekend. (See if you can say “You are invited”/“Can you attend?”/...)
    • When is the party? What time is it?
    • It is on Saturday at 6 o’clock…
  • Try to expand the conversation by discussing food, drinks, activities, music, dancing, etc.

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Read out loud the list of words you have prepared. Pay attention to your pronunciation. If there are other words you would like to know, you can ask your conversation partner using the target language (“How do you say X in Urdu/Wolof/Danish…?”/“What is X in Urdu/Wolof/Danish…?”).
  • Make a phone call to invite your conversation partner to the party. Make sure to discuss all the details – what is the occasion, when is the party, where is it, how long is it, who are the people invited, what are the activities, the address, the food, etc.?
    • Switch roles. This time you will be invited to a party by your conversation partner.
  • Show your conversation partner the short passage you could use to invite friends to a party through email or social media. Are there any mistakes? Discuss with your conversation partner the ways you could develop the passage to make it richer.
