Greetings and Simple Introductions (Novice)

Practice on Your Own

  • Practice how to greet people of various age groups in the country/ies where the language is spoken.
  • Practice what to say when you meet someone and what to say when you depart.
  • Greetings differ from country to country, and sometimes they even differ from place to place within a country. There may also be differences on the basis of class or social status. You need to learn how to greet people in different situations in various places. In many places greetings are very important, so you need to know how to greet different people appropriately.
  • Make a list of questions you can ask someone that you have just met, such as asking the person’s name (if it is proper to ask in this culture), where the person lives, etc. Questions may also differ depending on the age of the person you are asking.

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Be prepared to practice greetings, introducing yourself to your conversation partner and telling your conversation partner where you are from, what you study, which school you go to, why you want to learn this language, etc.
  • Do a role play where you ask your conversation partner and classmates various questions that you have practiced. You need to make sure that you use the right form according to age.
  • Switch roles and let your conversation partner and classmates ask you various questions. You should be prepared to answer them with proper gestures and body language.
