Locating Objects in Your Room (Novice)
Practice on Your Own
- Draw a map of your room in which you locate the main items (such as bed, desk/table, chair, windows, walls, shelves, couch, closet...) according to the current set‐up of the room.
- Make a list of the items in your room. If you cannot find the names for some, write them down to ask your conversation partner.
- Write questions about the locations of the objects, such as “Where is the bed?” and then answer the questions about each item that you have put on the map. You may need to look up how to say “next to,” “behind,” “in front of,” “on,” “under.”
- Prepare some adjectives related to colors and sizes to describe the items to your conversation partner.
Practice in Conversation Session
- Give your map to your conversation partner and be prepared to be asked to locate the objects in your map.
- Be prepared to answer questions about the size and color of the items. Pay close attention to the way your conversation partner asks about size and color.
- Be prepared to ask your conversation partner about his room. First ask questions about what items they has in their room (“Do you have a bed?” “Do you have a chair?” “Is there a window?”). Then, ask about the objects’ locations in the room (“Where is your bed?” “Where is your desk?”) and as you hear the answers draw a map of your conversation partner’s room.
- Be prepared to ask your conversation partner about the size and color of the objects in their room. Your conversation partner can help you with asking these questions.
