Numbers from 1-100 (Novice)
Practice on Your Own
- Practice counting from 1 to 100. Listen to audio examples of numbers and check your pronunciation.
- Mix the numbers up and practice them in different contexts. For example:
- Can you say your age and the ages of your family members and friends?
- Can you say the dates of your birthday and your family members’ and friends’ birthdays?
- Can you read prices?
- How do people read phone numbers in the language you are studying? Would 4135425264 be read “forty‐one, thirty‐five…" or "four-one-three" or...?
- Keep practicing throughout the week. Every time you encounter numbers between 1 and 100 (dates, prices, ages, etc.) think about how you would say the numbers in the language you are studying.
Practice in Conversation Session
- Warm‐up practice saying numbers. Be prepared for a warm‐up activity in which you practice saying numbers in similar ways to how you have been practicing on your own. Your conversation partner might write down random numbers and ask you to say them out loud. You may also be asked about your age, the date of your birthday, etc.
- Practice comprehending numbers. You have been practicing saying numbers on your own. You may not have had much chance to practice comprehending the numbers when spoken to you, so this will be practiced in your conversation session. Be prepared for your conversation partner or fellow students to say random numbers between 1 and 100 and have you write down the numbers.
- Simple arithmetic. Another way to practice numbers is by doing simple arithmetic. Your conversation partner may ask you “What is 41 plus 6?” or “What is 5 times 5?”
- Practice asking and answering questions with numbers. Be prepared to practice asking and answering questions with numbers using complete sentences. For example, “Are you 19 years old?” or “How many students are in your math class?”
- Taking it further. Depending on what else you have learned, you may do some activities that involve discussing dates, addresses, prices, etc. Perhaps you can do role plays that involve asking about prices or giving your address and phone number.
