Counting from 1-10 (Novice)

Practice on Your Own

  • Practice pronouncing the numbers 1‐10. Listen to audio examples of the numbers. Practice repeating after the speakers. Listen to as many examples of these numbers as you can from the materials you have available to you.
  • Look around you where you are studying, practice counting whatever you can see. Start with 1‐ 3, then work your way up to higher numbers. For example:
    • Count chairs.
    • Count people.
    • Count trees out the window.
    • Count pens or pencils.
    • Count words in a sentence or letters in a word.
  • As you go through the day, take time to count things around you. For example:
    • As you walk, count cracks in the sidewalk or the number of people you pass (or dogs, or trees, etc.)
    • As you wait in line, count the number of people ahead of you or behind you
    • As you wait for class to start, count people entering the classroom
  • Practice starting with any number between 1 and 10 and counting upward to 10 or backward down to 1.

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Warm‐up counting practice: Be prepared for a warm‐up activity in which you practice counting in similar ways to how you have been practicing on your own. Your conversation partner might have you count objects in the room or take turns counting out loud going around the room.
  • Practice comprehending numbers. You have been practicing counting on your own. You may not have had much chance to practice comprehending the numbers when spoken to you, so this will be practiced in your conversation session.
  • Be prepared for your conversation partner or others in your conversation group to say random numbers between 1 and 10 and have you indicate the number by:
    • holding up the right number of fingers
    • moving the right number of objects in front of you (works well with common objects such as pens, paperclips, dried beans, etc.)
    • pointing to a picture of the specified number of objects
