Telling a Friend about Life Abroad (Intermediate)
Practice on Your Own
Imagine you are studying abroad in a country where the language is spoken. You call a friend back home. Your friend is also studying the language you are learning but has not had a chance to travel to that country. They want to know what your daily life is like there.
- Think about how you will greet your friend and ask how they are doing in the language you are learning. Are greetings different over the phone than in person? You might want to ask how other people are doing as well (your friend’s family, mutual friends or classmates).
- Review how to talk about days and times.
- Review vocabulary for daily activities, including general activities such as waking up and eating as well as school‐related activities.
- Prepare to tell your friend about your daily life in the host country. Practice the conversation out loud.
Practice in Conversation Session
- Warm up by telling your conversation partner and fellow students where you are studying abroad (the country, the city, the university or program) and what kinds of classes and activities you are doing there.
- Be prepared to role play calling your friend back home. Greet your friend, tell them about your daily life in the host country, answer her/his questions, and end the conversation appropriately. Then switch roles with your role play partner and repeat the conversation.
- Have a follow‐up discussion with your conversation partner and fellow students. Have you studied abroad, or do you have plans to study abroad? What new experiences did you have or would you like to have?
