Weather Vocabulary (Novice)

Practice on Your Own

  • List the vocabulary you have learned to express how the weather is: sunny, cloudy, windy, etc. Write the names of a few cities or regions that are associated with each weather condition: Miami is sunny; London is cloudy; Seattle is rainy.
  • Practice asking about the weather: “How is the weather?” Write down this question a few times, each time answering it with different weather conditions. Also practice asking and answering out loud.
  • Now practice how to add a location to the question: “How is the weather in Boston?” If you are not able to do this, take notes to ask your conversation partner about it.
  • List other expressions that are associated with each weather type, such as warm, cold, hot, cool. Then use each in sentence combinations like this: Miami is sunny; Miami is warm; Boston is snowy; Boston is cold.

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Be prepared to list different weather types for your conversation partner.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about the weather conditions associated with seasons or places. For example:
    • Winter? Cold and snowy
    • Summer? Sunny and warm
    • Fall? Windy and cool
    • London? Cloudy and cool
    • Toronto? Snowy and cold
  • Now it is your turn. Be prepared to ask your conversation partner about the weather. For example:
    • How is the weather in London?
    • How is the weather in Seattle?
    • How is the weather in X, Y, etc.?
    • Winter?
    • Summer?
    • Etc.
