House Rules (Intermediate)

Practice on Your Own

Imagine you are in a country where the language is spoken. You are talking to the owner of a house where you want to rent a room. The owner is explaining the policies, rules, and regulations to you in the target language.

  • Make a list of words like rent, week, weekdays, guests, breakfast, lunch, refreshment, snacks, dinner, tea, coffee, day, night, etc.
  • Practice saying all of these words out loud in the target language.
  • You should also make a list of questions that you would like to ask the owner in the target language. Practice saying those out loud, too.
  • Practice role playing the situation. Play both parts (the prospective tenant and the owner) in order to practice both asking questions about the rules and policies of a house and answering them accordingly.

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Be prepared to tell your conversation partner and classmates the vocabulary that you listed.
  • Be prepared to tell your conversation partner or a classmate about the policies and rules that you can think of. In different countries, the rules may be different. They may vary depending on the owner of the place as well.
  • Do a role play where you will be the owner of the house and your role play partner will be the person who would like to rent a room. You need to explain the policies of your house and the rules and regulations that you have established. Your role play partner will ask you questions based on the culture of the country/ies where the language is spoken to make sure that you understand the cultural aspects along with the language.
  • Switch roles and repeat the conversation. Ask as many questions as you can.
