Street Food (Novice-Intermediate)

Practice on Your Own

Imagine you are studying or living in a country where the language is spoken. You are out with some friends and you decide to try some of the street foods that are commonly sold in that country.

  • Make a list of street foods that are common in the country/ies where the language is spoken.
  • Try to find out how to order street food. Should you go to the vendor, or will the vendor come to you? Should you take the food with you or eat it there? How can you communicate about prices, amounts, condiments, etc.? What if you have questions about the ingredients or how the food is prepared?
  • Write a dialogue in which one person asks questions about street foods and vendors and the other answers the questions. Also practice the conversation out loud.
  • Write a dialogue in which you buy food from a street vendor. Remember to include appropriate greetings and polite expressions (“please,” “thank you,” etc.). Practice the conversation out loud as well.

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Be prepared to name some street foods that are common in the country/ies where the language is spoken.
    • Can you tell your conversation partner more about these foods, such as the ingredients and how they are prepared?
  • Be prepared to have a conversation where you ask questions about street foods in the country/ies where the language is spoken and your conversation partner will answer your questions. Then switch roles and repeat the conversation, answering your conversation partner’s questions.
  • Role play buying food from a street vendor. Include greetings, polite expressions, and any questions or requests you may have about the food.
