Asking for and Giving Directions (Novice-Intermediate)

Practice on Your Own

  • Practice asking for directions out loud. If there are different ways to ask (different wording, formal vs. informal, etc.), make sure you practice all of them.
  • Practice giving directions to different places.
    • Give directions to different places on campus (the library, your dorm, the dining hall, etc.).
    • Give directions to places in Amherst, Northampton, or South Hadley (restaurants, the library, the post office, the bank, etc.).
    • Draw a made‐up map, find a map online, or use Google Maps to practice giving directions from one point to another. Maybe you can find a map of a place where the language is spoken.
  • Keep practicing throughout the week. As you walk through town or across campus, think about how you would give directions to your destination.

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Be prepared to role play asking for directions and giving directions. Don’t forget to use appropriate greetings and polite phrases (“thank you,” etc.). Repeat the directions back to your role play partner to make sure you understood. Your conversation partner may bring maps to use for this activity.
    • Have you learned different ways to ask for directions (different wording, formal vs. informal, etc.)? If so, make sure you practice each of them.
