Naming Body Parts (Novice)

Practice on Your Own

  • Make a list of visible body parts such as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, fingers, feet, hair. It is important to pay attention to the plural forms of some terms.
  • Draw a human body and name the body. Using different colors may help you memorize the names.
  • Write questions to ask about the body. Where is the nose? Where are the ears? What is this? What are these? What is that? What are those?
  • Pay attention to the use of prepositions. For example, are eyes “on” the head or “in” the head?

Practice in Conversation Session

  • Be prepared for your conversation partner to ask you to locate different body parts. You might do this by pointing to your own body or to a picture.
  • Be prepared to ask your conversation partner about the location of body parts using What/Where questions (Where is X?) and Yes/No questions (Is this X?).
  • Be prepared to talk about body parts in as many ways as possible. Can you say how many eyes or fingers you have? What adjectives have you learned that can be used to describe body parts? Can you compare different body parts (feet are bigger than hands, etc.)?
