Banks and Money

An exchange office

ATMs are scarce, and banks issue only a limited amount of checks per year. Therefore, in Serbia almost everything, including utility bills and the mortgage, is paid for in cash. Even employees and pensioners are paid in cash, which can be delivered to the home by the postman on a bi-weekly basis. Credit cards are used only in the more expensive restaurants, hotels and boutiques. In short, a traveler should generally be prepared to pay cash.

Banks are open from approximately 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is best to do one’s banking early in the day, since there is an occasional shortage of cash. Money can be exchanged in banks, but it is wise to compare rates to private money exchanges. One is advised not to exchange currency with those who operate on the street - it is illegal.
