Restrooms
The large public bathrooms found in various parts of the city are not recommended for use. Restrooms are normally found outside of mosques so that worshippers have the opportunity to cleanse before going inside. One can use the restroom at a restaurant, but it would be considered rude and inappropriate not to make a purchase. Small malls generally have a restroom with an attendant. There are no facilities in train stations or bus terminals.
Unlike many countries, it is permissible in Senegal to knock on the door of the nearest home and ask to use the facilities. One should always greet the homeowner as either “my brother” or “my sister,” then ask to use the restroom. When leaving, it is important to give a courteous thanks.
