Asking for Directions

A station sign

In every major city, centrally located tourist centers provide maps and information regarding transportation, lodging, food and entertainment. One can also purchase maps at bookstores and newsstands.

It is always permissible to ask a stranger for directions. Since Americans are welcome in Italy, it is not unusual for an Italian to not only give directions, but offer to take a tourist to the desired destination. As ever, common sense must be used in accepting such hospitality, and care taken not to misinterpret the gesture.
