Asking for Directions

A street sign for Rue Emile Zola

When asking for directions in France, one should at least attempt to speak French. Passersby can be impatient; however, one can always ask a police officer. Tourist centers at the heart of each city provide information, and maps are also liberally posted in the streets. Maps are for sale at newspaper stands and bookstores or are available for free at tourist centers.

Streets tend to be well marked. Street names are written on the buildings rather than on signs. It is helpful to be somewhat familiar with the quarter before asking for directions to a certain address.

"Where Is the Train Station?"
"Where Is the Nearest Streetcar Stop?"
"Where Is the Tourist Information Agency?"
