Pharmacies
There are two different types of pharmacies in Ecuador: large chain pharmacies and smaller family-owned pharmacies. Larger pharmacies have a much wider selection of merchandise including health and beauty products, candies, household aids and small gifts. These pharmacies always require a prescription for antibiotics or other serious medications.
Smaller, privately owned pharmacies do not offer such a wide range of products. They are normally devoted to selling medications, then perhaps a small assortment of candy and small gifts. At a smaller pharmacy, it is not always necessary to have a prescription when needing antibiotics or other medications. One can often describe symptoms to the pharmacist, who will suggest an appropriate medication.
