Crosswalks are found at intersections that have stop and walk lights. Pedestrians can be fairly secure that cars will stop for the lights, which makes these places safe. Pedestrians should not expect drivers to stop for them at random crosswalks where there are no walk lights.
There may be occasional overpasses built over a busy road. Never use these when alone at night, and use caution during the day if there are not many people nearby.
