French in Canada

Time

In Quebec, when time is written in French, the 24-hour clock is always used. However, when time is spoken of, both the 24- and 12-hour clocks are used. Older people are more apt to use the 24-hour clock, while younger people tend to use the 12-hour clock.

The rule is to be punctual for social engagements, with a fifteen minute grace period. One should always be directly on time for business, doctor’s appointments, and school.
