Azerbaijani belongs to the Turkic language family and is spoken by roughly 30 million people, primarily in Azerbaijan and northwestern Iran. Azerbaijani has a literary history dating back to the 13th century. It was written using the Arabic and Cyrillic alphabets before adopting a modified version of the Turkish alphabet in the early 1990s.
