Hindi has been influenced by Sanskrit as well as by the hundreds of regional languages of the Indian subcontinent. Hindi is closely related to and mutually intelligible with Urdu, especially in everyday use. Taken together, Hindi and Urdu are some of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with about 544 million total speakers.
