Most Turkmen people prefer to eat at home. However, new restaurants are rapidly opening in the major cities, a growing number featuring international cuisine.
Turkmen people like visiting family and friends; this is an important part of life. Invitations for dinners and parties are common, however people will also stop by unannounced. An abundance of food and elaborate dishes are then offered to the guests.
Shopping is a kind of entertainment in Turkmenistan. There are no shopping malls, but rather, large bazaars and small shops.
The bazaar is where a shopper can go find anything and everything.
Turkmens enjoy going out to walk in the many local parks. During major national holidays there are fireworks and the streets are filled with young people dancing and having fun. The above is a panorama of Ashgabat during the Independence Day fireworks.
