Everyday Norwegian

Typing Special Characters in Norwegian
(for users of US English keyboards)

The simplest solution is to use the copy and paste function on the computer to copy the character and to paste it into the answer blank where needed. Be sure not to include any extra spaces before or after the character. Characters for copying and pasting:
å
Å
ø
Ø
æ
Æ

On Macintosh computers the special characters can be formed using the option key:
å use option + a
Å use option + shift + a
ø use option + o
Ø use option + shift + o
æ use option + '
Æ use option + shift + '

Use the Norwegian keyboard option on Windows 95/98 machines. This option works only if support for the Norwegian keyboard has been installed. A list of supported keyboards will pop-up when clicking on the keyboard icon in the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar. The English keyboard appears as "En." When using the Norwegian keyboard layout on a keyboard labeled for English (United States), form special characters using these key combinations:
å use the [ key
Å use shift + the [ key
ø use the ; key
Ø use shift + the ; key
æ use the ' key
Æ use the shift + the ' key

Use the US-International keyboard on Windows 95/98 machines. On computers with the English keyboard set to US-International (as in some language labs) the special characters are formed using the right alt key plus a letter (with the shift for capital letters):
å use right alt + w
Å use right alt + shift + w
ø use right alt + l (the letter l)
Ø use right alt + shift + l (the letter l)
æ use right alt + z
Æ use right alt + shift + z

On most Windows machines use the alt key plus number codes on the numeric keyboard. The numbers lock key must be activated. The numbers keys above the letters will not work, the numeric keyboard to the right of the primary keyboard must be used:
å use alt + 0229
Å use alt + 0197
ø use alt + 0248
Ø use alt + 0216
æ use alt + 0230
Æ use alt + 0198
