Taxi Service
The cities in Ecuador are full of taxis – some say there are more taxicabs in Quito than in New York City. Most cabs are metered. Before getting in, ask if a meter is in use – if not, it will be necessary to either negotiate the fare or insist that the meter be turned on. For all cabs there is a minimum fare which is relatively inexpensive. Taxis are the main form of transportation to and from the airport. One can either telephone for a cab or hail one on the street. Young women are advised never to take a cab alone at night.
Many customers use cabs as the main form of transportation to and from social events. In order not to draw attention to this fact, some patrons choose to use taxis that maintain the appearance of normal cars.
