Italian in Italy

Restrooms

Most stores in Italy do not normally offer public restrooms, so one is advised to look in hotels, libraries, train and bus stations, gas stations and rest areas. The public restrooms built in various locations in the cities tend to be somewhat unhygienic and require the purchase of a restroom pass (frequently from a machine that demands exact change). Pay attention to safety issues before entering a public restroom. It is always an option to make a small purchase at a local bar, and then use their facilities. Although there are no coin-operated restrooms, there may often be restrooms with an attendant, in which case it is courteous to leave a tip. Restrooms are frequently unisex.
