Hungarian in Hungary

Getting a Taxi

A yellow taxi sign on top of a vehicle

Taxis in Hungary are affiliated with a variety of companies; there is no standard color or design for a taxi cab. All cabs have a yellow license plate and a TAXI sign on their roofs. One can either call for a cab or go to a taxi stand. Although it is possible to hail a cab, it is not standard practice. If you call for a cab, be prepared to give your location, the time you want the cab to arrive, how many people are travelling and the amount of luggage to be loaded. The driver will help load and unload the luggage. The cost of the ride is determined by distance and time; the meter should be set at zero or on the minimum cost. A 10 to 15% tip is customary and payment is in cash. A receipt will be provided upon request.
