German in Germany
Food Stores
Since bread is so central to German cuisine, most people buy it at the small, local bakeries where it is made on a daily basis. Small butcher shops are also quite popular for selling “better quality” meat. Other food items are normally bought at chain supermarkets, such as Aldi. Smaller stores close at 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. whereas larger stores stay open until 8:00 p.m.. The only places open later are the counters in gas stations where one can buy snacks and ice-cream.
