The post office provides mail services only. It is safe to mail valuables, since there are heavy fines for mail theft. There are post offices also in the country, or, in any case, there will at least be a “Post Agentur,” a small store that sells magazines, stamps, and provides basic mail services. Do not confuse “Post” - the post office - with “Postbank,” which is a bank. In large cities, you will often find a Post and a Postbank housed in the same building.
