German Dialects

Each region in Germany has its own dialects, which have many local variations. The dialects are used primarily within families and when conversing with people from one's own local area. Standard German is used in education, the broadcast media and written publications. The form of the language considered standard is closest to the way German is spoken in northern Germany around the city of Hanover. In conversation, Germans will switch between standard German and dialect depending upon who is involved in the converation and the topic being discussed. Many Germans will automatically use standard German when speaking with people from other parts of the country or with foreigners.
