Travel Around the Country

A decorated train station entrance

When one is going from Dakar city to other parts of the country, the most common form of transportation is either an "ndjage ndiaye," a large van capable of seating up to twenty-one passengers, or a smaller van, that seats up to seven. These vehicles generally start their routes at the port in the city and head for the farther corners of the country (which can be traversed by car in about six hours.) One can find these vans by simply going to the port and asking. With the level of attention to tourists and the practice of hospitality, it is possible for a traveler to easily find this information.

There is one train that travels to one of the provinces next to Dakar city, but vans may be easier and more time-efficient.
