Recycling and Trash

Luxembourg is known for being unusually clean, due in part to the fact that disposal of trash and recyclables is a high priority. Trash is picked up at the front door of the residence on a weekly basis. Although the homeowner initially pays for the trash bins, the town or village pays for the pickup. There are specific days per month when plastic can also be left out for pickup. Each village or town has its own dump where residents can bring additional garbage if necessary. Recyclables are placed in large bins marked for glass, metal or paper, generally set up near a school or the center of town.

Several times a year, a traveling vehicle is stationed in each village for residents to dispose of toxic materials such as paint and turpentine. In the cities, larger recycling centers accept other kinds of unwanted articles, including used furniture, dead batteries and old clothes.
